LET
THE AIR IN…
Thinking maybe she can relax a little, she opened the door of her workplace to let the air in. But she could not stand the sounds coming from the street. Usually some fresh air helped her relax when she was overwhelmed, but this time the traffic sounds were too loud. Opening a business on the main street had both advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage of this street was the noises. However, the roads were wide and transportation was easy. It took a maximum of forty-five minutes to get anywhere from here. But the drivers were still inpatient. They were honking their horns repeatedly and disturbing people. The roads were wide, transportation was easy yet people were impatient.
Like those drivers she too had no patience for anything. A customer was late today and Şengül was nervous that her day would be disrupted again. She was like this throughout her life, always in a hurry. She couldn't tolerate even the slightest wait, she was panicking as if the world had come to an end. In the evening she would rush home even though there was no one waiting for her. She was annoyed by the slow people on the road. People were too laid back.
In fact, she didn't like being this strict. She had fallen out with many of her friends because of this. She would go to meetings early and if any of her friends were late even for five minutes, she would get stressed and her face would fall because "A person cannot be kept waiting for so long."
Like this, she became more and more lonely. If only getting rid of this situation was as simple as getting rid of the traffic noise outside. But unfortunately, it was not something that would go away with only closing a window.
But weren't there people who were the exact opposite of her? Of course there were. People who could change their tune, stay calm, smile even when they are stressed... "How do they do it?" she thought. Mehmet Abi anh his grocer's came to mind. Whenever he stopped by, the place would be full of customers. He would tend to each one separately. Some would ask the price of chewing gum, some would shout from outside and ask, "How much is a kilo of potato". Some would be a company employee and give information about the products, others would come to chat with him because they were bored. Even in all that turmoil, he would smile and not complain.
Şengül used to think, "If they asked me to do this much work at the same time, I would freeze." Not only him, there were other people around her who were not aggressive despite their busy and stressful jobs. The common characteristic of all of them was that they had no time to scratch their heads, but they were happy. Their happiness attracted others.
But
was this the case everywhere in life? For example, how does salt become soft
and smooth? Or how does hard wheat turn into flour to make the softest
bread? Both are crushed in the mill and
turned into powder. When mixed with other products and gave flavor to the
bread.
In order to shape and bend an iron, which is a hard material, it was necessary to heat it and forge it. Or to shape a piece of glass, it was necessary to heat it on a fire. Trees and plants did not challenge the wind, on the contrary, they bowed to it in order not to break and thus took a beautiful shape. In other words, there was always a difficulty in life, but there was also a lot of beauty along with the difficulty. She had periods when he struggled in life and those times were the times where she developed herself. When she thought about those days, she always felt more confident. For example, during her father's illness, she had to sleep on a couch in a hospital room in another city for six months and she was constantly looking for people to give blood in an unfamiliar city. That's why she didn't have any must-haves when she went out of town. But she didn't do any of this with the intention to improve. She did it because it was something she had to do. And these processes helped her in every aspect of her life. She overcame a lot of her negative sides. So one needed difficulties to improve. With challenges one was backed into a corner and had to solve it somehow. But it's strange that one couldn't put oneself in the same challenge...
It was strange really... Why should one wait for a hardship to come from life in order to improve? Whereas she could have made the same progress if she had got out of her comfort zone and found a job.
The Experiential Design Teaching says: "Hunger keeps you alive."
Depriving
oneself of consuming when one has the opportunity to consume makes one stronger
and better.
Yes, she could busy herself with a job like she did when she looked after her father. She didn't have anyone to take care of now or any difficulties. Şengül thought for a moment, "What did I have to do when I was taking care of my father?" At that time, she didn't eat at noon, she had two meals a day. And because his father was sick she never brought processed foods into the house. Her eating habits were better at that time. She could do that now she thought. She decided not to eat processed foods before it caused her health problems. This was something she could let herself be short of. This time, without waiting for life to teach her a lesson, she set the stage for herself to learn a lesson. Because she wanted to overcome the behaviors even she herself found difficult to endure.
How?
With hunger, of course...
